Para Kids Academy

Since I have always been interested in the paranormal, my kids are also quite curious about spooky things like ghosts, cryptids, and things that go bump in the night.

Amelia and her mom Christy

Finnegan, my middle child, has been going to Fort Delaware with me and the DSGI team for three years now. He helps in the pavilion selling raffle tickets. He also joins me or another team member during some of the tours and gets to learn more about the history of the Fort and what we do as paranormal guides. Amelia, my youngest, is probably the most interested, but being young, there aren’t many places she can investigate with me. So when I found out about Interstate Paranormal Research (IPR) hosting a ParaKids Academy, I knew I needed to sign her up.

I bought a ticket for Amelia on July 1; the event happened on November 9, and she had to be very patient. The drive up to Columbia, PA was part of the fun because she had only heard me tell her about all the beautiful landscapes and treacherous backroads, haha. She took pictures of the open fields, commented on the horses and cows and repeatedly told me how gorgeous the scenery was as we drove the nearly two hours northwest to the Samuel Miller Mansion.

I’d like to thank my friends at Interstate Paranormal Research because they put a lot of care and thought into planning this event. Cindy had everyone feeling excited and comfortable after handing out special shirts to each of the kids as they signed in. She noticed Amelia’s ghost bag and learned that Amelia came prepared with some of her own equipment. Sierra discussed the many, many pieces of paranormal equipment already set up throughout the building, and Megan went through the history of the Samuel Miller Mansion; the kids were able to learn quite a bit about investigating before they even left the parlor. They asked a lot of great questions, and Amelia said that she had indeed investigated before in our living room. We all start somewhere 😉

The Print Shop

There were ten kids, and IPR divided them into two groups. A parent stayed with their child for the entire night, which was exciting for me. I think I might have been just as excited as Amelia. Okay, maybe not just as, but pretty close. Amelia’s first stop was the print shop. Laser grids, rem pods, motion sensors, recorders, cameras, an Ovilus, and an EDI were already set up in the space. Additionally, a very special guest was waiting, the one and only Trey Bader from My Haunted Manor, USA. (Amelia is a huge fan.) Trey is a member of Diamond State Ghost Investigators; our team is really where he started his paranormal journey.

Trey welcomed the kids and told them a little bit about one piece of equipment that projects a red, grid-pattern laser to identify visual disturbances. It also has a screen that identifies distance, direction and temperature fluctuations. If something warm is in front of it, you will see red dots on the screen; if something cold is in front of it, you will see blue dots. Pretty cool.

Megan asked the kids if anyone was brave enough to sit in a specific chair in the room. I remember being asked this when I first investigated the Manor last February. Just as I had volunteered first, so did Amelia. Very proud Mama moment for me. So she sat in the chair, and she held some equipment, including a Mel Meter. My 12-year-old girl vocalized when she started to feel very cold and when something or someone pulled on strands of her hair. Wow! The equipment she held showed both the temperature dropping and the EMF spike. So, she learned that these tools can help to more scientifically verify what she knew she was feeling.

The Magic Window Room

To get to the third floor of the Samuel Miller Mansion, you climb a spiral staircase. At the top, there is a landing and a room to the left and right. We went into the room to the left, the “magic window” room. This room looks like an attic with a vaulted ceiling with support beams. On one wall is a window, and when you climb through the window, you end up in an empty, open space that at one time had been used to lower feed down into carriages outside the building. Brenneman’s Feed Mill built the carriage and mill portion of this building in the late 1800s.

Amelia in the magic window room

Amelia and I went into this dark space; she put her equipment down and quietly listened and observed. Several times, she heard footsteps and thuds in this space. We both sensed something or someone was behind us and we felt cool breezes near the window opening. Mind you, this window is towards the center of the building; it does not look outside, it looks into the attic space. So feeling the cool breeze was very interesting.

When we stood in the actual attic space, Amelia decided to take a cute little gift out of her ghost bag and place it near her cat balls as a trigger object. She thought child spirits might like this, and she was right. Shortly after stepping away from the object and her cat balls, there was an interaction. The cat balls lit up! Megan and the kids decided to see if they could get more activity and played a knocking game. Megan knocked on the floor in a pattern. The pattern was “Shave and a Haircut” and the associated response “two bits.” At least five different times after knocking, there was a direct response. The kids were SO excited. They said, “if you knock for us again, we’ll have Tony bring you cookies.” Well, Tony, you had better leave several cookies in the magic window room.

The Kid’s Room

The last stop of the night was the kid’s room. I’ve experienced a lot of activity in this space during past investigations, so I was curious to see what would happen with kids trying to interact with ghost kids. Let me just say it was wild! In this space, the ten kids sat around the room in a circle. The parents stayed outside, looking in from the blue room.

Amelia and children in the kid's room

The kids asked questions about who was there with them. At one point, the Ovilus said Robert, which the equipment had also said in the print shop. The follow-up question was, “Is your last name Baker?” To which the dead bell sounded. The dead bell is a classic reception bell. It was sitting on the floor, away from everyone else. Robert Baker was the owner of the Baker Toy Company. In the 1920s, the Baker Toy Company took up residence in this building. Could the kids have been interacting with Robert Baker? Was he excited to have kids in a space where he once worked making toys?

Other interactions in this space were the EDI+ showing barometric pressure hits and the Busy Bee doll turning on and playing music twice on its own. The EDI+ uses a BME280 sensor from Bosch to measure humidity and pressure. The skies were perfectly clear, the space in the room was super dry, what could have been interacting with the box to indicate pressure changes? I’m not going to pretend to know what all of this means, and I won’t say it guarantees something paranormal. What I will say is that there was a ton of activity throughout the night, and I could not explain much of it as something “normal.”

She Graduated

Megan, Amelia and Sierra

After spending five hours learning and participating in a paranormal investigation, each of the ten kids graduated from the ParaKids Academy. IPR provided them with a certificate and a little goody bag. It was pretty awesome. Amelia did an awesome job. She was serious and quiet and experimented more and more with her equipment when she felt comfortable. I appreciate that she was thoughtful and objective in each room. I know how hard that can be because, of course, you want everything to be a ghost, right? But she really impressed me with her reasoning and her ability to decipher why certain things were happening or not happening.

Amelia, what would you say to other kids who might be interested in this type of event?

“If you want to participate in ParaKids Academy, you have to be open-minded. If you do see or feel something, that’s the greatest thing ever, but if you don’t have an experience, that’s okay too; you just try again another time.” – Amelia

Amelia also had an opportunity to be interviewed on camera by Jeff Bader. Jeff is a member and the video guy for Diamond State Ghost Investigators. He is also part of My Haunted Manor, USA with his brother Trey. Once Jeff calmed her down about the idea of being on camera, she talked a little bit about her experience in the print shop and what got her interested in the paranormal. She mentioned how excited she is to hear from her brother and me after our Paranormal Adventure Tours at Fort Delaware.

So, next year, when the Diamond State Ghost Investigators head back out to Fort Delaware, I have a funny feeling that Finnegan won’t be the only young person helping out in the pavilion. And I’m so excited!

Stay spooky, my friends!

Catching up and looking forward

It’s Spooky Season ghostie peeps! It has been a hot second since I last wrote a post for Christy’s Chronicles. Let me give you a recap on the last few months. Then a bit of encouragement to grab some tickets and come out to Fort Delaware this October for the Paranormal Adventure Tours!

Private Investigation at My Haunted Manor, USA

In mid-August, the team had a private investigation at the Samuel Miller Mansion as part of My Haunted Manor USA. I can’t share too much about the investigation because it will be featured in an upcoming episode on the My Haunted Project YouTube Channel. So be sure to subscribe! We had a small group when we visited which meant plenty of quiet time to really sit and immerse ourselves in the experience at MHM. Having a chance to explore the whole mansion with a small group, is such a different vibe than when we have visited for the public events. We absolutely love that place and really respect that the whole My Haunted Project is elevating the field of paranormal investigation at a truly international level by including 24/7 access via live streams and evidence from the public who visit.

Control room, camera view at Samuel Miller Mansion

I had the privilege to go back up to the Manor just a few weeks ago when the Ghost Pardee group had their private investigation. They were such a blast to meet. This particular trip was extra fun for me, because it afforded me the opportunity to learn more about a “command center” and really get behind the scenes of investigating. Watching the cameras, writing down the timestamps and being an extra set of eyes was a lot of fun.

If you want to know more about the Samuel Miller Mansion, check out the post from one of our last visits.

Pennhurst Asylum

In late August, I went to Pennhurst Asylum with other paranormal teams from the region. It was a blast being able to head back to Pennhurst to see how other teams investigate. I love learning about new methods or new ways to use old methods. I had the opportunity to investigate with the Bader Brothers AND their Mom and sister. Turns out that the whole family is gifted with a sixth sense and a supreme level of curiosity and passion. Seeing them investigate together was amazing; truly an honor.

Pennhurst is such a rough place to visit because from the moment you turn in and head down the drive you can feel the heaviness. Traumatic things happened at that asylum for many, many years and the energy left behind is incredibly sad. The groups I met that night were all incredibly respectful and kind-hearted. I can only hope that we were able to bring light and comfort to any spirits still lingering in that place.

Only Ghosts in the Building sat me down for an interview to talk a little bit about Pennhurst, as Emily from that podcast had been on that trip. The interview became a two-part podcast series on her show.

Please check out the Only Ghosts in the Building podcast. You can find them on Spotify and Patreon to name just a couple of platforms. And check out the DSGI podcast page to see a playlist with interviews featuring many of our investigators.

Warren’s Paracon

Group photo from the Warren's Paracon

This past weekend I attended my first Paracon. A group of friends and I went up to Gettysburg to attend The Warren’s Seekers of the Supernatural Paracon. Shout out to Emily, Kelsey and Morgan!

Sporting my DSGI hat, several of the paranormal teams from across the country learned about the Diamond State Ghost Investigators as they tried to come up with other words that fit that acronym. I think some of them might have just been learning about Delaware for the first time, too. Just kidding. I hope I represented the team well, next time I’ll make sure to have business cards or stickers. Every team or vendor that I spoke with was super kind and curious. They each genuinely wanted to learn more about DSGI, just as I wanted to learn more about them.

The Ghost Brothers were charming and funny. They also apparently like to roast their fans. Consider me roasted. But I did get a nickname out of it that should probably give me pause, but instead, Imma laugh about it. So the autographed picture says “To Christy “Big Crip.”” Look, I can’t help that I have a firm handshake Dalen Spratt, Juwan Mass, and Marcus Harvey. It’s gotta be the boxing. I promise I’m not gangsta!

One of the great things about attending something like a Paracon is that you get to network and connect with so many new people interested in the paranormal field. Of course, we also ran into the guys, the Bader brothers Trey and Jeff and Daryl from MHM, and several of our friends from Interstate Paranormal Research. We had a great time, albeit a very long day. Gettysburg, I can’t wait to come back!

Fort Delaware Paranormal Adventure Tours

Last week we had a pow-wow with Delaware State Parks to get ready for this coming weekend at Fort Delaware State Park on Pea Patch Island! The Paranormal Adventure Tours are back, this will be year 16! These tours are really something special, because we enjoy blending history with the thrill of ghost investigating.

Fort Delaware rooftop

This year’s tours kick off on Friday, October 4, featuring a special guest appearance by Daryl Marston from A&E’s Ghost Hunters and My Haunted Manor USA. Daryl is renowned for his captivating insights into the paranormal world, and attendees will have the chance to learn from one of the best in the field.

On Saturday, October 5, we’re thrilled to welcome our contest winner, Wayne, and his guest. DSGI can’t wait to meet you both and share this unique experience!

Fort Delaware has a rich history as a Civil War prison camp, where tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers were held, and thousands perished. With tales of ghostly encounters and eerie phenomena—like mysterious footsteps and shadowy figures—this historic site offers a perfect backdrop for exploration.

Get your tickets

Our Saturday tours are sold out, but there are still tickets available for some of the upcoming Friday nights! Grab your tickets now and prepare for an evening filled with adventure, education, and perhaps a few ghostly surprises. We can’t wait to see you there!

P.S. Search on the page for the word “paranormal” at the ticket link above. Then type in a Friday date in October to see which tour has tickets left!

And don’t forget to bring your flashlights!

Stay spooky, friends! – C

What’s the most important paranormal tool?

According to Dustin Pari, the most important paranormal tool is skepticism. That will stick with me from now on, along with my flashlight, which is the only other paranormal tool I don’t leave home without.

Trey Bader, Andy Lendway, Gina Dunham, Christy Mannering, Sherri Logan, Maureen Lipsett, Jeff Bader and Debbie Simmons

This past weekend, several Diamond State Ghost Investigators (DSGI) took a trip up to the Samuel Miller Mansion in Columbia, PA. (Thank you Andy for driving, you were incredibly patient with your passenger seat meteorologist.) As you learned in one of my last posts, this is the location for My Haunted Manor, USA (MHM). For some of us this was a first, for others, like myself it was my third trip. I really believe that once you’ve visited this place, you’ll feel called to return. There’s just something about this building that speaks to each person who visits. Once you learn the history the pull grows strong. (Shout out to Megan Hansen-Bisignaro from Interstate Paranormal Research (IPR) for being the location historian. She is a fount of knowledge.)

On Saturday, August 3, Dustin Pari (Ghost Hunters and Rebellious Spirits w/ Kris Williams), Ron Yacovetti and Lourdes Gonzalez (The Staticom Project) joined Daryl Marston (A&E Ghost Hunters), Trey Bader and Jeff Bader for a jam-packed evening of investigating and sharing research techniques at MHM. Several members of Interstate Paranormal Research were also there to guide the various groups roaming around the manor. (Shout out to Sierra and Megan for the emotional support hugs!)

Gina, Andy, Maureen, Sherri, Debbie, her partner Scott, and I were the members from DSGI who visited. We love Daryl and the Bader brothers (the latter being members of DSGI, too) and are always looking for ways to show our support. But also, we have really grown to love the location. Columbia, PA is like a little diamond in the rough. I almost don’t want to write about it because I don’t want it to get strobe lights and beacons, but it’s absolutely worthy of that fandom.

Group C

Attic Cold Spots

Image of a thermal camera with a cold spot

We were placed into groups of around 10, and we split up into various levels of the manor throughout the night. My group’s first stop was the 2nd floor, and we went up into the attic. For those in the area you know how hot it has been, well the attic was about 95 degrees, so we weren’t up there long. However, Maureen used her thermal camera while we were up there, and in the room with the “magic window,” we found a peculiar cold spot. The spot was a good ten degrees cooler than the rest of the room. I won’t tell you what Andy said it looked like, but to me, the shape looked like a small child kneeling near a ladder.

The “magic window” is a small window on one side of the attic that you can climb into. I did the climbing Saturday night so we could see if the cold spot was coming from inside that room. It was not. That room had a consistent temperature throughout. It’s very quiet in that space. I’d love to do a solo in there one night. Saturday night, the space was soothing. You could hear the rain on the roof. If it hadn’t been 95 degrees and humid I probably would have sat in there for awhile.

What caused the cold spot? Could it have been rain seeping down through the bricks and under the floor? Maybe. We’ll test it out again next time we visit. We didn’t see or feel water, but it’s also best to try to replicate things like this.

The White Room

The guys will have to correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this room on the 2nd floor is called the white room simply because it’s a relatively empty room painted white. Their cameras in the control center all have names, so when they download footage to collect evidence, they will know where it came from. Tony from IPR told us that many groups do not stay in the white room long. We wanted to test that theory. Looking back, we didn’t stay in the room long. But it was because we heard voices from other places in the manor. When looking or listening for evidence and outside contamination, it’s hard to want to stay there. I didn’t feel that anything was trying to push us out of the room. It’s another spot I’d like to visit again

The Print Shop

Ron Yacovetti and Lourdes Gonzalez were set up in the print shop with their Staticom Project. Admittedly, going into this, I knew very little about Ron and Lourdes. While they explained the Staticom Project, I have to admit I still don’t fully understand it. I normally feel relatively tech-savvy, but it went right over my head when Ron was talking about quantum something or other. However, that didn’t stop it from being completely riveting. I am not motivated to learn more about how it all works.

Dustin Pari was in the room while we were standing in a half-moon shape around the Staticom setup. He asked each of us to introduce ourselves, provide an answer to the question and then ask the question. Another admission – the entire time I was panicking, thinking I’m going to have to say “Hi my name is Christy, intense anxiety, how does being put on the spot make you feel?” However, I listened to others in the group all being cool, calm and collected, and I sucked it up. Plus, it was wild to hear this machine responding. Imagine a garble of voices talking back and forth as if spirits were conversing in the same room. Then, one of us asks a question, and the voices almost pause, stopping, and as if they realize we are talking to them.

Otherworldly validation

One woman asked how many bracelets were on her arm. She held out her arm. I heard the Staticom machine count 2, 3, 4 at one point. I wasn’t brave enough to speak up and say it, but that’s what I heard. Tony talked about oatmeal raisin cookies and the voices says raisin. When it was my turn I said, “Hi I’m Christy, I like to bake cookies and I like boxing, what hobbies do you like?” (Or something like that, when I’m put on the spot my memory kindly blurs everything). The response wasn’t an answer to my question. Instead, the voice through the Staticom said, “Keep it up, you’re doing great.”

When life gets tough put on your boxing gloves.

WHAT!????

Validation of my efforts from the spirit world!?

Come on now. That’s just about the coolest thing that has ever happened to me.

Later down the line Trey introduced himself, he said his favorite sport is football and asked what their favorite sport it. The response was almost immediate. “Boxing.” Were we communicating with a spirit who has an appreciation for boxing? When I introduced myself as someone who boxes, did I make a connection? I don’t know. I can’t explain what happened. All I know is that at that moment, it really did seem as though something out there that we couldn’t see was indeed making intelligent responses.

Shadows in the basement

The basement is the only place where I’ve actually heard an honest to goodness voice. I heard a woman screaming. It sounded far away. She sounded like she was trying to talk, but a male voice cut her off. That experience was a couple of weeks ago. This past Saturday, I didn’t hear anything. There were multiple shadows, though. How do you see a shadow when you’re in the dark? Usually, for me, it’s because the shadow will block out a light that I know is there. This happens a lot. Could other people be adjusting in the space near me or my eyes playing tricks on me? Sure. When the person standing next to me sees the same thing and says it before I say anything, that helps to confirm what’s happening. Perhaps the shadows walking by represent residual energy from the individuals who escaped through the underground railroad in the basement tunnel system.

Another woman in our group seemed to have a strong connection to the energy around her. She spoke to a woman she sensed. She asked the woman what she had been doing in the basement. It’s not a question I would have asked, or at least I wouldn’t have phrased it that way. It is believed that a woman was raped and murdered in the basement a long time ago. As far as I know, there are no news reports about this, but several different mediums and gifted individuals have sensed the same thing. The MHM crew is looking into ground penetrating radar to see if they can find out more information on what exists beneath the dirt.

I hope that the spirits know they are safe to communicate with me if they wish. I am a safe space. No one deserves to go through what this ghostly basement woman potentially went through. As someone who is a survivor of sexual assault, it just makes me think differently about the types of questions to ask.

We need more time

So, now, I just have one more question. When can we go back? We need more time.

My Haunted Manor, USA, is part of a larger project called My Haunted Project. It is recognized as the world’s most documented multi-venue paranormal investigation initiative. My Haunted Project is an innovative initiative dedicated to exploring and documenting paranormal activities across various historical and intriguing locations, including the My Haunted Hotel, My Haunted Mansion, and My Haunted Manor.
