Evidence: Pennhurst

Pennhurst State School and Hospital, commonly known as Pennhurst Asylum, was a complex located in Spring City, Pennsylvania, that operated as an institution for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Established in 1908, Pennhurst was initially conceived with the goal of providing care and education for people with intellectual disabilities, but over the years, it faced numerous challenges and controversies.

The institution was characterized by overcrowded conditions, inadequate staffing, and reports of mistreatment and neglect. In the mid-20th century, Pennhurst became a symbol of the shortcomings and abuses within the mental health and disability care system. Legal actions were taken against the institution, leading to a landmark case known as Pennhurst State School and Hospital v. Halderman in 1984. The case resulted in a court order to close the institution and shift towards community-based care.

Pennhurst Asylum officially closed its doors in 1987, marking the end of an era. The buildings were left abandoned for many years, gaining a reputation for paranormal activity and attracting urban explorers and enthusiasts interested in its eerie history.

In recent times, some of the Pennhurst buildings have been repurposed for different uses, while others remain in a state of decay. The site serves as a powerful reminder of the evolution of societal attitudes towards individuals with disabilities and the ongoing efforts to improve the quality of care for this population. Additionally, the story of Pennhurst Asylum has contributed to broader discussions about human rights, institutional reform, and the deinstitutionalization movement in the United States.

A voice counts 1, 2 then a high “Here” is heard. Investigators in the room never heard it.

A voice is heard by the investigators.

1.5 seconds in, you can hear a breath.

Investigators were in the basement of Pennhurst Asylum. You can clearly hear footsteps walking. It was coming from above us. We checked and found no one on that floor. You can hear them twice in this clip.

You’ll hear a voice repeat what the investigator says. Not heard at the time.

At the 5 second mark, what sounds like a girl’s singing voice is heard.

At the 6 second mark, what sounds like a man whispering.

When asked if they are still near us or back at the top [of the hallway] we get a response that sounds like its saying “No he’s back at the top” or “Nobody is at the top”

When asked “Are you trying to scare us?” all equipment on the entire floor is triggered one after another as it moves away from where we are located.
